How to Find Genuinely Cheap Flights

Finding cheap flights is less about secret tricks and more about flexibility and a few good tools. Here's what actually works, minus the myths.

Be flexible with dates and airports

The single biggest lever is flexibility. Use the month or "flexible dates" view on flight search engines to spot the cheapest days, which are often midweek. Checking nearby airports at both ends can cut the fare significantly.

Set price alerts early

Start watching a route well ahead of time and set alerts so you learn what a "good" price looks like. When a fare drops below that baseline, book — prices rarely keep falling.

Consider budget carriers honestly

Low-cost airlines can be a bargain, but add up the extras: cabin bags, seat selection and checked luggage. Sometimes a "more expensive" full-service ticket is cheaper once baggage is included. Travel with a carry-on to keep budget fares cheap.

Look at one-way and mixed tickets

Booking two one-way tickets, sometimes on different airlines, can beat a return fare. Search engines that allow "mix and match" itineraries make this easy to compare.

The cookie myth

Clearing cookies or browsing privately doesn't meaningfully change prices — that's mostly a myth. Real price changes come from supply, demand and how far out you book. The sweet spot for many routes is a few weeks to a couple of months ahead.
